Work has begun on rebuilding Airport Road with the hope that the $24 million project will be completed by the end of 2009.
This project will include widening Airport Road to four lanes, rebuilding intersections at opposite ends of the road and a new roundabout at the North 27th Street intersection, as well as a new roundabout near the airport and Airport Road. Pedestrian tunnels will be built beneath Alkali Creek and Airport Roads.
Riverside Contracting out of Missoula, the company awarded the contract for this project, is setting up a website for this project. Feel free to access this website at http://www.airportroad.org/.
Absolutely NO LOADS OVER 12-FEET will be permitted on Airport Road between 27th Street and Main Street.
*Work on Airport Road will continue to be from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Crews will not work Friday, Saturday or Sunday in observence of the 4th of July holiday. 27th Street will remain two lanes (one in each direction) near the top of the hill for installation of the remaining box culvert for the multi-use path. Traffic will remain on the new half of the box culvert while the remaining half is installed. The east bound ramp from Airport Road to 27th Street will remain closed and traffic will be routed to the temporary 4-way stop. Excavation to the new subgrade for the round-a-bout will be completed next week. Traffic routes will be constantly changing. Please be aware of signs and channeling devices to ensure safe travel in the work zone.
Other related work:
Aviation Place will remain closed for retaining wall and sewer work. Terminal Circle travel lanes will be narrowed near the museum through the main entrance to the airport. Expect delays and slower speeds while entering and exiting the Airport Terminal.
Retaining wall work will continue at the east end of the Airport entrance and also next to the south parking lot.
Street lighting and signal work will continue on Airport Road near the Alkali Creek intersection. Bridge work will continue at Alkali Creek Road.
Please use an alternate route whenever possible.*
